Pre-primary learning package

This Learning Package is suitable for distribution to educators interested in animal welfare and environmental education for pre-primary aged children or equivalent.
The lessons and resources included in this package are designed to encourage empathy in children and an understanding of the need for compassion and respect for people, animals and the environment, while recognising the interconnection among these components.
Most of our learning material has a strong environmental element and is based on stories featuring recurring characters such as animals and children.
Content is organised into 5 modules:

2. Working animals’ welfare
3. Working animals’ worth
4. Working animals’ world
5. Communicating messages beyond the classroom

3. Facilitator’s guide

This facilitator’s guide embraces best practices and trends in international education, including STEM, Literacy, Social and emotional learning, Global Citizenship, Environmental education and One Health. It also offers guidance on Inclusive Education, Assessment For Learning and the organisation of group reading. The facilitator’s guide comprises 26 one-hour lesson plans organised into 4 modules: 1. 4. Core competencies

This module focuses on students’ safety and security around animals and basic hygiene in school and at home.

5. Working animals’ welfare

This module focuses on the Five Freedoms of animal welfare such as Freedom from hunger and thirst; Freedom from discomfort; Freedom from pain, injury or disease; Freedom to express normal behaviour and Freedom from fear and distress. Students will explore animal sentience, animal body language and basic handling techniques.

6. Working animals’ worth

This module focuses on the socio-economic value of working animals for their users, their owners and the community. Students will explore the different jobs undertaken by working animals as well as the consequences of poor animal welfare for animals and their users.

7. Working animals’ world

This module focuses on the connections that exist between animals, humans and the environment, and the consequences of pollution, habitat loss, climate change and over exploitation. This module also offers solutions and ideas for a more sustainable living.

8. Communication

This module focuses on how students can share messages around human, animal and environmental welfare beyond the classroom by organising assemblies, community events and shows.

9. YouTube link to Five Freedoms animation movie

This animation movie is addressed at children aged 6 to 12. It can be used within the Welfare module of our learning package, as indicated in the Facilitator’s guide, or in any other context. The animation movie lasts just under 5 minutes and requires a good sound system.
